To celebrate an entire decade of records, E.P.'s, compilations, tours, and self-abuse, Scatterbox is planning their tenth birthday with two back to back shows in the Coeur d'Alene/Spokane area. The first show will be in their hometown of Coeur d'Alene, ID at The Mouse Trap on Friday, May 27th 2011, with the second show following up the next night at The A Club in Spokane, WA on Saturday, May 28th 2011. Opening bands are to be announced at the moment and more details to come, HOWEVER, the band will be reuniting with ALL past members (Dan Stamper, Jared Brown, Chris Copulos, and Sean Nicol) to join the stage to play songs from the previous albums. A limited edition Anniversary show silkscreened poster is in the works (with a limited edition run of only 50 prints) and will be available at the show, with a limited edition of only 10 available directly from the Blackhouse Web Store.

A couple of years back, Scatterbox was tapped on the shoulder to record a track for a Queers tribute record that came out on Asian Man Records. Due to some deadline issues beyond the bands control, they were not able to get it submitted in time. Now that the band is off hiatus and working on a new record, we decided to dig this little gem up and release it in two versions:

This is Justin. You may be asking yourself "What does Justin do?", or "Why is this relevant?", or "What's with the mask?" Well, Justin Eugene Smith, is a lot of things. He is known for pushing dumpsters on fire into busy streets full of oncoming traffic, but he is also known for lending a helping hand to a guy drowning in his own vomit outside of a bar, by way of getting the owners to call drunkie a cab. He is a gentle giant. An officer, and a gentleman. Today, however, he is most importantly, the newest addition to the SCATTERBOX nomad throwdown. With a previous history of playing guitar and bass in bands such as Linus and Call Me Renegade, he has now been officially "jumped in" to the gang to crush your dome with his guitar skills. Call it a fluke, call it boredom, call it.....luck? I would tack it up to being at the right goddamn place at the right goddamn time, that three degenerates from some pretty reputable punk rock bands, somehow managed to put their brains together (in as random and desolate of a place as tourist-trap Northern Idaho of all places), and write music. Why did this happen? Because number 1, It WAS a FLUKE. Number 2, it WAS (and IS) out of sheer BOREDOM, and number 3, LUCK.

Call Me Renegade is not necessarily the group that will go out of its way to try and impress you. After all, YOU, the walking critic, will always be first in line to cast judgement. After all it is you who decides for yourself, right? You bet your ass you do. The only thing is, they strive to, and just may, impress you. With the speed and technicality of a mechanic after a cheap line of stepped on blow, this band does not break pace, engraining the aggressiveness of the 80's and 90's hardcore punk throwbacks, but all the while purging worthwhile hooks and thought provoking lyric matter without any means of sugar coating.

I mean, they pretty much have no choice. They are from Idaho. If they can't make a mark there....they're fucked.

With members of well established Northwest bands such as Sledgeback, Linus, Scatterbox, Moral Crux, and Nothing Pretty, and having worked off and on over the years on various music projects over the years, these guys are dialed in and prepared to rape your ears sonically....with no lube. Songs are being completed and releases are in the works. You may like it, you may hate it, but wither way, it WORKS. After hearing it, I gotta say it works pretty well if you ask me.

R.I.P. Tom Pfaeffle.

We were deeply saddened to hear that seattle sound engineer, producer, and teacher Tom Pfaeffle was tragically killed Friday night.

Tom manned the boards and mics at Tank Studio in Black Diamond, WA where bands and Sound on the Sound favorites like Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, Evergreen Terrace, Scatterbox, The Hollowpoints, The Sea Navy, recorded their records. Bands and students of sound flocked to Tom not only for his expertise, working with Artists in the 80's and 90's ranging from Nirvana to Great White to B.B. King, but because by all accounts, he was an absolutely wonderful guy who was passionate about perfectly capturing the sound and feel of a band. When Tom wasn’t recording at The Tank he was teaching the future sound technicians of Seattle as an audio production instructor at The Seattle Art Institute.

Tom’s death is a huge loss to music, and to his family, friends, students, and bands that worked with and loved him. Our deepest condolences to them all.

Sure the provenance is stellar: somewhat up and out of the ashes of hardcore’s best and brightest, SCATTERBOX has their knotty roots almost knuckle deep into the heart of the fast and frenetic Sound of 1981. Which is where it should be placed if you had any sense, any sense of authenticity or any common sense at all. So, there are bullshit detectors and there are bullshit detectors and if you lived through 1981 the best ones are the ones on the sides of your head. You see the ears are what keep you from thinking [wrongly so] that any band AFTER 1983 was worth any sort of goddamned thing. Like dirty hippies and old jazzbos trying to tell you that ain’t shit happened after Janis or Miles, this type of logic comes from the gut. But it comes from the gut because the ears are not listening.

Which is why this SCATTERBOX shit appeals so much. It has successfully tricked the ear of yesteryear that it’s at Ruthies, or the Wilson Center, or A7, or Rajis. It’s distilled all of what was cool about hearing this shit for the first time and managed to not make you feel bad about it THIS time. Fucking real deal? Goddamned right. Vintage AND new the music rises above the merely nostalgic to make you want to spray paint the walls, grab your skate, and fuck shit up. And with several and copious nods to post-punk sensibilities [via song titles, design aesthetic], it dawns that SCATTERBOX should be a lot bigger than they are with their heartfelt pre-post take on all of the loud fast rules. But they should be a lot of things probably: not living in Idaho, getting real and paying jobs, cutting out that racket. However, it would be our sincere hope that they continue existing for the sheer and pure fact that they make hard music to play well look easy and sound like they fucking mean it in the process, which is much, much more than 98 percent of the things you’ll hear this week that’ll work their way into your brain pans.

Hardcore the way hardcore was played when it meant something to play it. We love these fucking guys. And you should too.

Official Release Date Set For Scatterbox "ENEMIES".

An official release date has been set for February 10th, 2009 for Inland Northwest hardcore punk band Scatterbox's fifth record titled "ENEMIES". The record is set for release as a co-release between Blackhouse Records and Clickpop Records.

The new album, produced by Tom Pfaeffle (Fear Before, Evergreen Terrace, Great White) and Nick Jarvelin (The Hollowpoints) and mixed and mastered by Dave Richards and Paul Turpin (Idiot Pilot, The Trucks) will be available for pre-order in December and will come with a free live CD recorded at the Knitting Factory in Spokane, WA from their recent show with The Misfits.

October 28th marked the official street date of the 3 DVD collector's edition release of Troma Films newest 35 mm masterpiece, "Poultrygeist! Night of The Chicken Dead". Scatterbox was tapped on the shoulder to contribute the song "Sensitive" to the films soundtrack. Being this was about two years ago when initially asked to contribute, they have patiently kept their fingers crossed in hopes that their song would play at a point where someone dies a gruesome death. Needless to say, they got their wish.....

Excited were they to see that "Sensitive" plays while a guy gets a mop handle crammed up his ass and out the front of his penis after screwing a raw chicken. This scene, as well as many other blood-soaked scenes similar to this are now available on video store shelves everywhere. The Birth of Tragedy magazine, with a title lifted from the book by Nietzsche of the
same name, marked a certain sort of scabrous and profane looking into the garbaged
heart of our present place in space. Simultaneously and unapologetically intellectual
and resolutely probing, The Birth of Tragedy’s examination of SEX, DEPRESSION,
FEAR, POWER, GOD, LOVE and the almost-soon-to-be-never-released MADNESS issue formed a sui generis basis for reinterpreting the entire premise of spoken word recordings: how you said it mattered not, it was all about what you said. And pulling interviewed artists from the Fear, Power, and God issues of the Birth of Tragedy was easy, as was aligning their varied interests and approaches. Recording was full on guerilla style with everybody recording their contribution on whatever they had available. Art was generated by the inimitable and now artist of some renown Jim Blanchard and with its white vinyl [also initially released on cassette tape] on the US releases and black vinyl on the UK releases [the largely suspect Worker’s Playtime Records], most of the heavy lifting was done.

Right in time to have its distribution done in by the folding of distributor [Jem,
Systematic, and Rough Trade, in pretty short order] after distributor. Fitful later
attempts to reissue the record, most notably by the Swiss German label Skin & Speech, turned up little and in the intervening years since its 1988 release, in addition to the deaths of several of some of the original participants, no one’s approached who was even remotely interested in resurrecting it in anywhere near to its original glory. Until now. And this Blackhouse-led initiative--a rare and limited re-issue of a rare and limited issue—marks the last and fi nal chapter in this glorious and storied enterprise.

Though Allen Ginsberg, Anton LaVey from the Church of Satan, Mr. V.O. Real, and
Whipping Boy have all shuffled off of this mortal coil, the remaining participants—
LYDIA LUNCH, MATT HECKERT formerly of SURVIVAL RESEARCH LABS, CHARLES MANSON, JELLO BIAFRA and HENRY ROLLINS—are still destroying anti-culture, one project at a time.
And for this I have to say to some degree we’re all a little bit better off.

On Friday the kind folks over at VICE Magazine featured a piece on the upcoming Blackhouse re-release of the long out of print "The Birth of Tragedy Magazine's FEAR POWER GOD", featuring an exclusive interview with Birth of Tragedy mastermind, Oxbow Frontman, and FIGHT! author Eugene Robinson. Street date for this release is August 12th and pre-orders will begin on July 1st.

Alright now it's finally done. Limited to 100 (50 of which will available via pre-order/webstore), this cassette is the first of a four part cassette series from Blackhouse (one for each season) and is hand numbered and assembled. These took a while to finish, but they turned out awesome.

The first cassette features Barack Obama (Texas) on side A, featuring 10 loud as all hell tracks of thrash, and Execution Techniques (Ohio) on side B, serving up some experimental drone that is definitely one of a kind.

Back in around 1988, Oxbow frontman / Author / Mixed Martial Arts ass-kicker Eugene S. Robinson compiled and released the Birth of Tragedy Magazine's now legendary spoken word compilation "FEAR POWER GOD". Released on cassette in 1988 and later on LP in 1989 on CFY Records, it went out of print later down the road and has been long sought after in all formats, including the mystery of a CD version ever in previous existence.

Now, twenty years later, we here at Blackhouse are proud to announce the first ever CD release of this obscure classic, featuring selections by the likes of LYDIA LUNCH, HENRY ROLLINS, JELLO BIAFRA, ALLEN GINSBURG, ANTON LAVEY, CHARLES MANSON, MR. V. O. REAL, MATT HECKERT, an extremely haunting track by WHIPPING BOY and Many More!

Scatterbox show turns into melee.

Well, it looks as though a certain bar owner in the touristy, Tahoe-like suburb of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho can't seem to get it together when it comes to having a different element of entertainment besides cover bands for the evening.

Scatterbox got through about four songs of their set on November 9th at The Rock Joint, a new bar in Coeur d'Alene, when the owner shut the power off, cutting their set short, becuase the crowd was "moshing and breaking shit", according to the venue owner, who had cut the power himself. The event was a fundraiser for the Coeur d'Alene Food Bank. When Scatterbox was cut short, an argument ensued between Tom White, vocalist for Scatterbox, members of the crowd, and the owner of the club, which in the end, set off a large crowd of people and police were called as the band broke down their equipment in the back of the building.

A damaged pool table, trashed bathroom, various other small broken items (glasses, a couple of chairs), and fifteen cops later, the members of the band were about to be charged with "inciting a riot" and arrested, until a discussion between the band members and police ensued. In the end, police decided to not charge the band. This was Scatterbox's first show in their home town in almost two years.

The band had this to say about the incident.

"We're just amazed that something that was supposed to be an all around good thing and a fun night turned into a big trainwreck due to the owner of that clubs actions and how he decided to handle things that night. Everything was fine until he killed the power. Then that's when things started getting broken. We can't control what an angry mob of people does. We've been doing this for the better part of a decade, and we did nothing out of the ordinary. We did the same thing we do at every show. Show up, play, and hope the crowd likes it. This night was no different, so how did we incite anything?"

The show was booked two months in advance. The line up consisted of three punk rock bands. After the incident, the owner of The Rock Joint told members of Scatterbox "We didn't sign up for punk." The Rock Joint is currently for sale.

So after the first batch of 2007 Blackhouse Sampler CD's flew the fuck out the door WAAAAAAYYY faster than we had expected them to, we have a new batch ready to go and they are back up for sale on our webstore. These babies are only a buck, it has nine songs, and comes with a bunch of free extra stuff.

Scatterbox is currrently holed up in Seattle, WA at The Tank Studios (www.thetankstudio.com) working on their fourth full length record and second record for Clickpop/SpinArt. The tracking is almost completely finished, and then vocals will be finished up in another studio in another part of Seattle. The record is being produced by Nick Jarvelin (The Hollowpoints, Sledgeback) and Tom Phaeffle (Great White, Scorpions, Jewel, Fear Before The March of Flames, Gatsby's American Dream, and a million others) and is scheduled for an early 2008 release. Rough unmastered tracks will be up at the bands myspace page shortly.

Scatterbox to record new record for Clickpop/SpinArt.

In the first week of October, Scatterbox will be emerging from the alcohol-soaked hole in the ground that they so kindly refer to as their "rehersal space" to expose themselves to actual UV rays from the sun, and go to Seattle, WA to record their new (title TBA) full length for Clickpop Records/SpinArt. The record is slated to be recorded at THE TANK Recording Studio and Nick Jarvelin (Hollowpoints, Sledgeback) will be producing. Mixing and mastering duties will be handled by Mr. Paul Turpin (Idiot Pilot, Trucks, The Pale). The band will be filming the recording process and making a little documentary as well that should appear on Youtube and elsewhere shortly after they get back.
This record is their first with Mark and Sean handling guitar duties so email them at the bands MYSPACE and tell them they'd better not fuck up! Haha... Until then, stay tuned for more info, including news on some shows, some new merch, and a limited edition Live CD that is coming out soon. Until, then, myspace message the band with your ideas for what the record should be titled. They probably won't use it, but they'll get a good laugh at your expense. Holla!!!!!!!

Yes, you heard it right. We here at Blackhouse are proud (and pretty fucking stoked) to be present a limited edition (only 250 will be made) of a pro-quality Live CD from Moral Crux. The show was recorded in 2003 while touring to support the Lookout! Records release "Pop Culture Assassins". This disc has about 25 tracks on it and songs range from as far back as the first album! All copies are fully packaged and numbered. Pre-orders will be available starting at Midnight 9/7/07. Cost is $7 PPD. Get it quick before these babies are gone!

Linus and The Smelly Bastards Vocalist arrested for Arson.

We just found this out recently. Drag....

J.D.D Howry (Real name Jason Howry), vocalist for Blackhouse Records band Linus and The Smelly Bastards was recently arrested and charged with first degree arson and conspiracy to commit first degree arson when he and a friend burned down a significant part of a church library in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Two others were involved, however are only facing the conspiracy charge. Howry is only 20 years of age, but will most likely be tried as an adult. You can read the full story HERE
